Final Thoughts
Last week I read about Verde AgriTech being awarded a Brazilian patent for a fertilizer production process:
Verde Fertilizantes LTDA, has been granted Brazilian patent No. BR 10 2021 015788 7 for an industrial process that produces powdered, granulated, or microgranulated mineral fertilizers enriched with biological additives. The patent, issued by Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), also covers the resulting fertilizer product.
This patent is notable, though not entirely novel in terms of vision — at least beyond Brazil.
The patent is effectively describes the integration of a microbe into “potassium rich rock fertilizer,” like glauconitic siltstone, Verde’s K-Forte. The patent suggests it could be plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, support microbes that fix nitrogen, solubolize P, or be surrounding biocontrol.
The key point is that the process avoids drying after inoculation, which is hazardous for microbes. The claim is that viability is preserved for up to ~180 days integrated into this product.
Integration of crop protection into and onto fertilizer remains a relatively untapped mechanism for crop application — coating fertilizer is done with the likes of nitrogen stabilizer, but if looking at biostimulants, micronutrients, or other crop protection segments, I’d speculate it’s well under 10% of acres in North America.
