This week I read CropLife's Can AI Help Ag Retailers Stop Guessing on Inventory?, covering Syngenta's Jeff Cecil at the Syngenta Media Summit.
Cecil stated that "In our industry, forecasting is not a strength."
He went on to say how Syngenta has spent roughly two years on how it forecasts, aiming to update plans "almost every week, every day" instead of relying on an annual plan that's outdated soon after it's built.
I think what’s interesting is that it says more about Syngenta’s process updating than it does about AI helping.
Can AI help? Yes. But his comments suggest that forecasting and inventory management is mainly an information problem, when it reality that’s only half of it.
Inventory management and supply chain effectiveness is operations x intelligence.
