Many new solutions that will be available for farmers in 2035 are sitting in a patent office today.
Patents are one of the places where companies convey where they're spending R&D money, or what they are thinking about, or areas of their business they deem important, often many years before a product reaches any commercial plan or their executive team begins talking about it. Ultimately, patent filings can show portions of strategy, including which problems a company thinks are worth solving, how it plans to defend a product segment, or how it's stretching a platform or capability into new or extended uses.
One call out since I get messages about this every time I publish patent filing coverage: An application is not a grant, and a grant doesn’t not mean commercial viability and it definitely does not mean it is going to become a product. However, I think looking at what companies are doing is useful to expand how we think about the future, and helps convey what partners, or competitors are potentially moving towards in their business.
